Common Terms

ANSI. - American National Standards Institute.  A privately funded organization that identifies industrial/public national consensus standards and coordinates their development.  Many ANSI (http://www.ansi.org/ ) standards relate to safe design/performance of equipment and safe practices or procedures.

 

Breakthrough Time - The time from initial chemical contact to detection.

 

CFR - Code of Federal Regulations.  A codification of rules published in the Federal Register by the executive departments and agencies of the federal government.  The code is divided into 50 Titles representing the broad areas subject to federal regulations.

 

Exposure Limits - The concentration in workplace air of a chemical deemed the maximum acceptable.  This means that most workers can be exposed at given levels or lower without harmful effects. Exposure limits in a common use are 1) TLV-TWA (threshold limit value-time weighted average); 2) STEL(short-term exposure limit); and 3) C (Ceiling value). OSHA exposed limits are called PEL (permissable exposure limits).

 

Grade “D” Air - Grade “D” is an air standard established by the ANSI/Compressed Gas Association (CGA G-7-1988) as air suitable for breathing. Currently Grade “D” Breathing Air means that the oxygen content (v/v) must contain the amount of oxygen normally present in atmospheric air of 19.5 to 23.5 percent oxygen for synthesized air; hydrocarbon (condensed) of 5 milligrams per cubic meter of air or less; carbon monoxide of 10 ppm or less, and carbon dioxide of 1,000 ppm or less.

 

IDLH - Immediately Dangerous to Life and Health; maximum concentration of chemical in air from which one could escape within 30 minutes without a respirator and without suffering any irreversible health effects.

 

MSDS - Material Safety Data Sheet (OSHA Form 20).  Contains descriptive information on hazardous chemicals under OSHA’s Hazard Communication Standard (HCS).  These data sheets also provide precautionary information on the safe handling of the gas as well as emergency and first aid procedures.

 

NIOSH. - National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health.  The agency of the Public Health Service that test and certifies respiratory and air-sampling devices. It recommends exposure limits to OSHA for substances, investigates incidents, and researches occupational safety.

 

OSHA. - The Occupational Safety and Health Administration. Part of the U.S. Dept. of Labor. The regulatory and enforcement agency for safety and health in most U.S. industrial sectors.

 

TLV - Threshold Limit Value. An estimate of the average safe airborne concentration of a substance that represents conditions under which it is believed that nearly all workers may be repeatedly exposed day after day without adverse effect. The TLV values are published yearly by the ACGIH, American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (http://www.acgih.org/ ) in the TLV Booklet. TLV values should be prefaced with the year issued. TLV is a trademark of ACGIH.

 

Cartridge & Prefilter Information

 

Organic Vapors Cartridge -Use cartridge for protection against organic vapors. Do not exceed maximum use concentrations established by regulatory standards. Not to be used with isocyanates.

 

Acid Gases Cartridge - Cartridge is used for protection against chlorine, hydrogen chloride, sulfur dioxide or formaldehyde. OSHA regulations require gas-proof goggles be worn when halfmask respirators are used for protection against formaldehyde. Do not exceed maximum use concentrations established by regulatory standards. Not to be used with isocyanates.

 

Organic Vapors and Acid Gases Cartridge  - Use cartridge for protection against organic vapors, chlorine, hydrogren chloride, sulfur dioxide, chlorine dioxide or hydrogen sulfide (escape only). Do not exceed maximum use concentrations established by regulatory standards. Not to be used with isocyanates.

 

Ammonia and Methylamine Cartridge - Use cartridge for protection against ammonia and methylamine. Do not exceed maximum use concentrations established by regulatory standards.

 

N95 Particulate Filter - Not Oil Resistant - 95% Filter efficiency level and effective against particulate aerosols free of oil.

 

N99/R95 Particulate Filter - Oil Resistant -99% Filter efficiency level and effective against particulate aerosols free of oil and 95% filter efficiency level and effective against all (oil and non-oil) particulate aerosols. Time use restrictions apply for oil-based aerosols.

 

P100 Particulate Filter - Oil Proof-99.97% Filter efficiency level and effective against all (oil and non-oil) particulate aerosols. No time use restrictions apply.
