In order to keep workers safe and healthy, proper biowaste cleanup procedures and attire are critical. Biowaste is any type of waste produced by organic matter. This includes waste created during diagnosis or treatment of humans. It is very important to protect employees from bloodborne pathogens found in industrial and medical settings. Bloodborne pathogens are defined by OSHA as "pathogenic microorganisms that are present in human blood and can cause disease in humans." Pathogens that fall into this category include the hepatitis B virus (HBV) and the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). There is no safe level defined for bloodborne pathogens because they have the ability to replicate.

There are many steps that can be taken to avoid exposure to bloodborne pathogens. First of all, employers should provide hand-washing stations, hand cleansers, and towels that are readily accessible to employees. Employees should also wash hands immediately after removing gloves or other protective equipment. Protective clothing and equipment should be mandatory in all biohazard areas.

Protective biohazard clothing may include gloves, gowns, laboratory coats, mouthpieces, masks, face shields, pocket masks, resuscitation bags, and other ventilation devices.
